About
Colour, with the subject removed.
The last frame of a series in which a lit object was moved progressively closer to the lens until it stopped being an object.
No digital gradient is involved. The transitions are optical, produced by defocus and by two gels overlapping in front of a single source.
It is used across the studio as a reference for how far a colour can be pushed before it stops holding an edge.
